About Richard:

 

Richard Starkey has won his share of flatpicking contests, but his playing retains a dignity and a straightforwardness that's driving but subtle. And his rhythm playing is superb. In 1992 he was offered the position at Martin Guitars as "player technician." He travels around the country presenting clinics at dealerships and festivals. Back in Nazareth he is kind of utility infielder for the company, doing everything from instrument setups (his specialty) to production repairs and assisting on R&D projects. Rick Starkey appears at Guitar Camp North courtesy of Martin Guitars -- he will teach various playing styles in addition to his demonstrations. His latest recording, with Mark Cosgrove, is titled Delaware Crossing.

 

Richard has been actively involved with stringed instrument making and repair for more than 25 years. His clinic includes a historical overview of the Martin Guitar Company throughout its 169 year lifetime, a video tour of the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and plenty of the acoustic guitar picking and singing in a wide range of styles that he has mastered. A relaxed and informal entertainer, Starkey is capable of answering just about any question posed on the history, construction and sound of the “C.F. Martin” guitar.
